The Ducati Testastretta 11° engine of the DesertX is with regard to the design a typical Ducati V2, which is also called L-engine. This is due to the fact that - unlike usual in transversely mounted V-engines - the front cylinder is almost horizontal, while the rear cylinder is almost vertically upwards. This design has thermal advantages, because it avoids the waste heat from the front cylinder putting an additional load on the rear one. The disadvantage is that the cylinder head with the valve cover of the front cylinder, under which the technically complex desmodromic valve control system is located, protrudes unprotected between the engine guard and the radiator. This also applies to the spark plug and ignition coil.
That's why protecting the cylinder head and valve cover is particularly important.
To protect the area from road debris, spray as well as kicked up gravel or other foreign objects, we have designed this cylinder and valve cover protection cover to fit precisely. The solid 4-point mounting, in conjunction with the dimensioning of the aluminum sheet and the horizontal bending, ensures high component rigidity and protection despite low weight, which also reduces the risk of substantial damage to the front cylinder in the event of mechanical impact.
With regard to design, our protective cover ensures symmetry and a perfect appearance: it picks up and continues the shape of the asymmetrical, left-hand intake manifold in the direction of travel. The cover clears up the area bounded by the radiator at the top and the engine guard at the bottom, so that in addition to the protective effect, the design underscores the adventure look of the DesertX. Last but not least, the trapezoidal openings in the cover also contribute to this.
To ensure that everything looks like a single piece, the aluminum cover is precisely cut out by laser. Both surrounding edges are then carefully rounded. The final finish is created by powder coating in RAL 9005 - deep black with a finely structured texture. Thus, the cover integrates perfectly.
